Overseas objectives New world

BRITISH FOREIGN POLICY Over the past decades, Mr Hague believes British foreign policy has effectively frozen into three main "blocs" - the US, the European Union and the Middle East.

His most ambitious plan is to tear up this blueprint and replace it with what he calls a "distinctive British foreign policy". This means being unafraid to promote better links with smaller countries, as well as emerging economic powerhouses such as Brazil, India and China.

As well as trade, relations can be maintained through education, culture, sport, diplomacy and military co-operation, Mr Hague thinks.

"We're getting on with that straight away. Many ministers will be visiting India in the coming months to strongly signal to India that we want to elevate that entire relationship.

"This is the exciting part of foreign policy - this is why I say it is very important to look at the opportunities as well as the threats.

"Napoleon's maxim was that the side that stays within its fortifications is beaten - and in foreign policy, and in ensuring our future security, the country that is just reactive is in decline. So we are embarking on a major new phase, more systematically and strategically than has been done in this country for a very long time. That is what I call a distinctive British foreign policy. We need a Foreign Office that has the confidence in itself and the rest of the Government to lead that process. The Prime Minister and I are determined to put right the problem of recent years that the Foreign Office has often not been able to play that role in foreign policy."

When asked if that was at least partly because Tony Blair used to do the job himself, he replied: "Yes!" PAKISTAN AND AFGHANISTAN Mr Hague returned this weekend from a three-day visit to Pakistan, a country he describes as having a "critically important" relationship with Britain - and not only because it is the source of many terrorist threats.

He says: "There is a long-term relationship with Pakistan that is very important to this country.

"It is strategically important but it is also important in terms of the myriad of human and business connections between the United Kingdom and Pakistan."

US/UK RELATIONS The BP oil spill and President Barack Obama's reaction to it, including what many see as anti-British rhetoric, suggest that the coming months and years could put a significant strain on what has long been seen as the "special relationship".

Mr Hague is pro-American, and would seem to be one of the best choices to ensure strong ties between London and Washington. He reveals here that he is already discussing ways with Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, of co-operating to ensure BP- style disasters cannot happen again.

"Government to government relations are excellent at every level ... we've had the warmest possible welcome from the Obama administration.

"It is important, of course for the leaders of our countries together to set the right tone about the BP accident, which is a catastrophe.

"I think one of the things that will emerge in bilateral relations, quite possibly, is work together by the UK and the US on how to prevent oil spills, and how to deal with them."

IRAN "It's very serious because it threatens a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, it threatens the wo

Mettam I nearly quit

NEW Gainsborough Trinity striker Leon Mettam debated quitting football after he was released by Lincoln City three years ago.

Mettam has joined the Blue Tiffany And Co Square Bet North outfit after scoring 24 goals for league rivals Corby Town last season.

However, following his release by former Imps boss John Schofield in 2007, Mettam (pictured) struggled to adapt to part-time football with Stamford, while working in a full-time job.

But after his early difficulties, the Lincoln-bor n hotshot flourished to become one of non-league's most prolific strikers.

"You don't realise how lucky you are until you come out of the Football League," he said.

"I went straight from full-time football, training for three-and- a-half hours a day, to working 12-hour days.

"I was training straight after work and it wiped me out for six months.

"My performances went downhill and I wondered whether it was worth it.

"But I got used to it and I am certainly reaping the benefits now."

While the 23-year-old is happy to have joined Brian Little's Trinity he has not ruled out playing in the Football League again.

"Having said that, the time I spent at Lincoln was unbelievable. Even if I had to take a pay-cut, I would jump at the chance to get back into the league."

LONG AND SIMPLE -- A CLASS ACT

THIS summer, fashion is straightforward, right? According to the powers that be in the industry, namely Celine's Phoebe Philo and Yves Saint Laurent's Stefano Pilati, it's all about minimalism. Therefore, in order to look remotely stylish you must seek out the perfect white T-shirt, tuck it in to a slouchy pair of chinos, fling on a blazer and head for the door. Short of turning up to work in a six-year-old dressinggown and slippers, getting dressed in the morning really couldn't be easier. But then we discovered Replica watches this season's interpretation of the maxi-dress.

While maxi-dresses in all their Sienna Miller-inspired, frou- frou glory came to prominence three summers ago, this year's breed is decidedly toned down. Cut from soft jersey and available in a host of tonal shades of grey, beige and green, the new maxi is a far less outlandish affair. And the best news: it's nowhere near as inviting to Colleen, Alex et al who, along with the rest of the Wag fraternity, have made brightly printed, bust-squeezing versions their own in recent years.

Pared-down maxi-dress styles popped up on the spring/summer catwalks at Stella McCartney and Sass and Bide but were by no means a huge story. Luckily for us, the high street has embraced this look with gusto, so much so that you'd be hard-pressed to find a store that is not offering a version of the dress this summer.

Oasis has a beautifully-cut long dress in gunmetal jersey, Gap has a lovely khaki version and Dorothy Perkins a bargain-priced short-sleeved style.

Replica watches

They are a low-maintenance addition to our wardrobes -- all this style of dress requires is that we fling one over our head and never mind the unshaven state of our legs. However, shopping for the right one demands a little more work. Of paramount importance is the length. Be sure to opt for a dress that falls below your ankles, or even skims your feet -- tall girls should try H&M, which is offering long dresses in extra-long lengths this summer. Then there is the crucial matter of fit. While it's divinely comfortable, jersey can be unforgiving on the tummy and bum, so it's a good idea to avoid styles that are too clingy. A sackshaped maxi-dress as seen at Stella McCartney will do much to cover up Replica watches a problem tummy area, while one with a subtle (not neon) print will detract attention from lumps and bumps.

This season's maxi is set to be the default dress for warm summer days, and balmy evenings if accessorised with a statement necklace and plaited belt. It looks best with a pair of flat sandals.

Now all we need is for the weather to be kind ...

Loner used Facebook to target

A LONER targeted teenage girls over the internet for sex, threatening to rape and kill them if they did not comply with his demands, a court heard.

Matthew Crouch, 22, used a computer at his local library to befriend two of his victims, aged 13 and 15, via the social networking website Facebook.

Twomore victims, a 17-year old and a 15-year-old, were targeted after Crouch discovered their phone numbers and sent text threats.

LV Earrings Ian Mullarkey, prosecuting, said Crouch sent a "friend request" to one of the girls via Facebook and, after she accepted, the pair exchanged phone numbers.

"When the victim refused his suggestion that she commit a sex act on him, Crouch said he knew where she lived and would get one of his mates to put a box of matches through the door of her home and set fire to it, " said Mr Mullarkey.

"He also told her 'I am going to rape you and kill you tomorrow. Good luck', " he added.

Crouch sent a text to one complainant, asking her to have a night in with him, but the girl refused asking him to leave her alone.

One of the victims, who exchanged emails with Crouch via Facebook agreed to meet him and he told her that if she ever cheated on him he would "see her in heaven".

Mr Mullarkey said the defendant gave her a silver bracelet with love hearts on and kissed her against her wishes.

Another met Crouch at a house party, where he groped her breasts after trying to cuddle and kiss her.

Crouch, formerly of Lumley Court, Hebburn, South Tyneside, who was living in Hartlepool at the time of the offences, admitted Roger Dubuis Fake a number of charges, including sexual activity with a child and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, harassment and threats to kill.

They dated between September 1, last year and February 28.

Christine Egerton, mitigating, said Crouch was an "isolated individual" with learning difficulties and problems with social skills.

She said: "What he did was criminal, but it was also childish and immature. He is very sorry."

Judge Howard Crowson adjourned sentencing saying he wanted more guidance about an assessment provided by the Probation Service, which described Crouch as a high risk in terms of his dangerousness.

Not so merry happy

Kate Nash Gloucester Guildhall STOMPING all over her keyboard in her converse trainers while two stage hands knelt down and gripped on to it to stop it from toppling over, leaping off and sauntering off stage was certainly a memorable way to end Nike Shox Shoes Kate Nash's exclusive Glastonbury warm-up gig. The quirky singer songwriter delivered a lively show with one or two surprises.

She's a tricky performer to get your head around - she walked sweetly and neatly on stage dressed in an orange leopard print vest with black leggings, sipping from a tiny white china tea cup and then burst into angry rants about men never listening to her, reeling off a list of things she hates such as seagulls, being sick, and her disgust of homophobes, as well as bursting into defiant lyrics and howling into the microphone.

For the most part the crowd loved her. She got a huge cheer for her hit Foundations and Mouthwash as well as her encore of Pumpkin Soup. But the Mansion Song left the audience baffled. They stared in bewilderment as she asked the lighting crew to turn off the spotlights and make the stage as dark as they could before launching into a furious tirade of expletives and sexually explicit, vulgar lyrics about groupies being used and abused. It was a relief when it was over.

Replica Gerald Genta Watches

It seemed like she wasn't playing for the crowd - more for her own amusement and at times she appeared to be in her own little bubble on stage and didn't really connect with the audience. She only really engaged them in telling the women in the crowd to fight a statistic she'd heard that day of there being far fewer female composers than males. Underlining her point with expletives she invited them to get involved in music. She does cut a striking impression but not always a good one. The 22-year-old has a swagger of arrogance, a self-satisfied painted red pout and lacks any warmth. It didn't come across well to the crowds and in fact her backing guitarists looked miserable and bored.

Kate almost seems a little precocious. It's undeniable she's talented - her cockney-laced vocal is engaging and the upbeat, cheeky sound of some of her tracks is fab. But somehow it was a sullen, slightly spiky performance with only the odd smile to herself. In the lyrics especially she smacked of someone with a chip on her shoulder, Brass Earrings slightly troubled, self indulgent as well as childish and spoilt.

Despite her charming voice, good guitar and keyboard playing, it was her kooky character that left you thinking - that was good but I'm not sure how much I like her. And despite all the cute sipping from her little tea cup, certainly not someone you'd ever want to invite round for tea. Unfortunately this was a strong, talented performer totally lacking the likeability factor.
