2010-Jul-30 - Oldest foxhound pack in Englan

The Berkeley Hunt will again be opening its kennels to visitors on Sunday, July 4. Once every year the hunt gives tours of the kennels enabling the public to meet the hounds, which are part of the oldest foxhound pack in the country.

There will also be plenty of family entertainment, including cream teas, a barbecue and bar, terrier racing, a fun dog show that can be entered on the day, a children's fun fair, face replica watches V painting, skittles and stalls.

Entrance is free from 2pm, with the kennel tours at 2.15pm and 3.15pm.

The kennels are in Ham, near Berkeley, and the hounds are still owned by the Berkeley family, who are based at Berkeley Castle. 2010-Jul-29 - Musical take on nation's birth

Stop reading here if you don't want to know what happens at the end of Musical Theatre West's newest production.

OK, those who are still reading, now I can tell you that at the end of "1776," our forefathers sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4.

Actually, like the film "The Blind Side," this musical is "based" on a true story, so that's not really what happened.

"For the play, it happens in one day, but in reality, it took some time, " said director Nick DeGruccio, in a recent phone interview . "Because it's a musical, and because it's theater, it takes some dramatic license, of course. A few characters are combined."

But much of the dialogue is authentic, taken from contemporary documents, such as the letters John and Abigail Adams wrote to each other.

With a story so familiar, it would seem "1776" might not have much dramatic tension. But DeGruccio, who first directed the musical six years ago for Performance Riverside, found that the events were so improbable and unusual that he started worrying about the outcome.

"We know how it ends, we sign the Declaration and become a nation," he said. "Yet you get caught up in the fact that this will never get signed, that they will never come to an agreement. By all reasoning, we should be British citizens and have British passports. Our forefathers were up against insurmountable odds. That's what I found so thrilling."

Politics in 1776 wasn't that much different from today. Even before there were political parties, there were factions: Southern plantation owners, Northern farmers, lawyers, merchants. All were looking to Wholesale Bally Handbags protect their interests with early earmarks.

One of the biggest bones of contention was slavery. The first draft of the document contained language that included that institution.

The fight over that language had northerner Benjamin Franklin, who founded the first anti-slavery society in America, and Virginian Thomas Jefferson, who owned slaves, on the same side in opposition to Southerners, whose economy was partially based on slave labor.

All the arguing about this and other issues reminded DeGruccio of today's excruciating political process. "How anything ever gets signed in Congress, I'll never know," he said.

On the other hand, the fighting also inspired him.

"There are many opinions, but that's what makes this country so wonderful, is that we can have these opinions, and we can state them out loud," he said. "I want the audience to come not as a Republican or a Democrat. I'm surprised at how caught up I am in my patriotism because of the play, and how we take for granted today so many things that we're able to do because of what our forefathers did for us."

The arguments also have their lighter moments.

"Within all of this drama, it's also extremely funny," DeGruccio said. "Any time you put a bunch of men together, and they all have passion, there's going to be fighting, and there are going to be jokes."

The play even has romance, coming mostly from the Abigail and John Adams relationship. In addition to writing of her love, Mrs. Adams also served as an early military correspondent.

2010-Jul-28 - Passenger pointed knife at tax

DRUNKEN Nicholas McClean pointed a knife at a taxi driver before making off without paying the Pounds 3 fare.

The 28-year-old got in the taxi with two men in Harrowby Road, Meir, and went to nearby Kingsley Street at 9.20pm on April 24.

Prosecutor Paul bags-B Spratt told Stokeon-Trent Crown Court that the two other men got out and when the driver said the fare was Pounds 3, McClean produced a large kitchen knife from a wooden box.

"He held it in his hands and pointed the end of the knife at the driver before he got out," said Mr Spratt.

The driver, who was not injured but was upset, reversed away and called the police. He later saw the defendant chasing one of the other men up Stanton Road.

Mr Spratt said: "The defendant went to a nearby house and discarded the knife in the street. The driver recovered the knife and put it in his vehicle until police arrived."

Police arrested McClean in Weston Road, Meir. He had been drinking.

McClean, of Flamborough Grove, Middleport, who has 128 previous offences, pleaded guilty to affray and having a bladed article.

The offences were committed while he was subject to a suspended sentence and a community order.

Stephen Oldham, in mitigation, said McClean knew he would receive a prison sentence.

Jailing McClean for a total of 13 months, Judge Mark Eades said: "Taxi drivers provide a valuable service to the public. Our society would be a poorer place if taxi drivers refused to take ordinary citizens because they were scared of what might happen. "

2010-Jul-28 - Passionate about horror

M. JAMIL

He is best known as the producer and director of the horror comedy Momok The Movie, which is set to see its sequel, Momok - Jangan Panggil Aku, soon.

M. Jamil is the son of silver screen icon Datuk Sarimah Ahmad, who famously starred in Tan Sri P Ramlee's films such as Ali Baba Bujang Lapok and Ibu Mertua Ku.

He was also the Most Promising Actor at the Second Malaysian Film Festival in 1982.

The film, which earned him the award, was tear-jerker Dia Ibuku, the story of a long-suffering mother and her two sons.

Momok was Pekan-born Jamil's return to filmmaking after a 15- year hiatus. The producer/director actually made Momok as a short VCD movie in 2004.

Both films (Momok The Movie and the VCD version) starred his mother's close pal Datuk Aziz Sattar as Pak Ajis, a kindly food stall operator with a dark past.

Jamil won his award in 1982 for playing Sarimah's son.

The mother-and-son team also starred Cheap Jordan Shoes in Momok The Movie alongside Jamil's wife Siti Rohani Wahid and their daughters Siti Nursyahira Nabila, Siti Qasrina Qistina, Siti Nayli Yusrina, Siti Batriesya Marsya and Siti Sarah Saqirah.

Jamil and Sarimah last collaborated in Jamil's Warna-Warna Hati, a 1990 film directed by AR Badul, the brother of Jangan Tidur Lagi host and Akademi Fantasia chief judge Adlin Aman Ramlie.

They first starred together in Jejak Bertapak in 1982.

A graduate in film from Ohio Dominican University in the United States, Jamil runs his film company Galaksi Seni.
